Tesco are the largest supermarket retailer in the UK and have seen their profits and market share grow rapidly over the past 5 years. They have a burgeoning textile based business but face the same price and regulatory pressures as all their competitors. Added to that is an unprecedented level of scrutiny into the working practices of their supply chain. Tesco are one of a growing group of global brands and retailers who require their suppliers to meet strict environmental chemical and worker safety standards, and along with many other major brands they face the daunting challenge of enforcing those standards throughout an increasingly complex supply chain. Tesco have already embraced the need for supply chain traceability and recognised Historic Futures as the market leaders, and obvious choice, for their landmark work on cotton traceability - so the prospect of using the same user friendly interface for dyehouse auditing was appealing. “At Tesco we are committed to reducing the negative impacts of our textile supply chain on the environment," says Tara Young, Fabric Sourcing Manager at Tesco. “ICE Compliance is the perfect scheme for delivery and policing of tough-but-achievable standards for worker safety, environmental compliance and responsible use of chemicals throughout our fabric supply base.” “Like all credible audit schemes ICE Compliance will fail sub-standard operations, but the retail and textile industry will be appreciative of the provision of advice, assistance and pragmatic action plans to continuously improve dyehouses” Young concludes, “It’s a scheme run by recognised experts, for retailers it is pragmatic, and will greatly enhance our ability to avoid brand-damaging production facilities being used in the manufacture of Tesco products” |
